  • Beyond resilience: the science of crises

    Oxford University Press

Forthcoming, autumn 2025. In this book I describe the world as an increasingly complex system with ever-increasing
interdependence. I thereby show how we have shaped our world - from the emergence of
the first life on earth to the rise of populism. The book highlights recent research from so-
called ‘complex systems science’. This gives a deeper understanding of for example

shows how we can achieve stability and durability in these issues. Co-authored with Rutger

Sciences (KNAW) and former rector magnificus of Eindhoven University of Technology. He is
co-founder of a research center for complex systems.

    Routledge, UK

To be published in 2024. This book describes and explains the role of energy in society. The way humanity harvested and used energy has shaped societies. Conversely, societal progress along with changing environmental factors have transformed and continue to transform the world’s energy
system. Co-authored with Gert Jan Kramer, professor at Utrecht University.
