The Tsjernina for children of Chernobyl foundation
The Tsjernina for children of Chernobyl foundation, active since the beginning of the '90s, provides humanitarian aid to children living in the areas that were struck by the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in 1986.
The foundation lends aid to the hospital in the Belarusian city of Mogilev and to eleven children art schools, of which nine are in Belarus and two in Russia. Although the project is small-scale in nature, it is of major importance to those concerned. The hospital and schools update us yearly on the expenses for which they cannot find sufficient public funding. Whenever possible, we provide them with the required financial support. Because the aid is delivered directly to the benificiaries, no money is lost to red tape or corruption.
The foundation obtains its financial resources through the selling of works created by the students of children art schools in Russia and Belarus and through the hosting of benefit concerts. Our first auction, conducted by the well-known auctioneer J.P. Glerum, took place on the 17th of May 1992 with the participation of many important Russian guests, such as Mrs Jeltsin. From that points onwards, we have continued to organise auctions and sales exhibitions. A complete list of our activities can be found on the page "Expositions".
The foundation has received multiple grants from the Dutch Center for Sustainable Development Cooperation (NCDO). We are staffed exclusively by volunteers.
In 1995, Schelto Patijn, then Mayor of Amsterdam, opened the foundation's own gallery, which can still be visited to view and buy works of art of the foundation.
