On this day in football history

1930 In their first official match against a continental side Scotland beat France 2-0 in Paris. The previous year a Scottish FA team had toured Norway, Germany and Holland but no caps were awarded for appearances on this tour.
1934 Charlton Athletic signed inside-forward George Stephenson from Preston North End. He was the younger brother of Clem Stephenson the famous Aston Villa and Huddersfield Town player. Began his career in 1919 with Aston Villa and moved to Derby County in 1927, Sheffield Wednesday in 1930 and Preston in 1933. He played in three promoted sides in successive seasons; North End in 1933 and Charlton in 1934 and 1935 as they progresed from the Third Division South to the First Division. In all he played 319 League matches and scored 121 goals. He won three England caps between 1928 and 1931 all against continental opposition. Later managed Huddersfield Town.
1950 Jimmy Mullen (Wolverhampton Wanderers) became England's first ever full international substitute when he replaced Jackie Milburn after ten minutes of their match against Belgium in Brussels. He also became the first England substitute to score in a 4-1 victory.
1958 In a warm-up match for the World Cup Finals in Sweden England met the Soviet Union for the first time and drew 1-1 in Moscow.
2000 Former Rangers, Chelsea and Danish international striker Brian Laudrup retired while on the books of Ajax due to a chronic achilles tendon injury.
